OET Training Resources
The OET (Occupational English Test) was created especially for careers in the medical field. Tests imitate actual workplace situations and assess language proficiency appropriate for nursing. OET offers a valid and trustworthy evaluation of all four language abilities—listening, reading, writing, and speaking—with a focus on interpersonal communication in the context of the medical and healthcare industries.
Four Modules (Occupational English Test):
There are four subtests on the Occupational English Test, each of which focuses on a different topic.
(1) Listening
| Part (A)– consultation extracts (about 5 minutes each) | Part B – short workplace extracts (about 1 minute each) | Part C – presentation extracts (about 5 minutes each) |
| Your capacity to recognise certain facts during a consultation is evaluated in Part A. In order to complete the health professional’s notes, you will listen to two recorded patient-health professional consultations. The health professionals can be from any of the 12 professions that are eligible to take the OET. | Your ability to analyse brief excerpts from the workplace of the healthcare industry will be evaluated in Part B. You will hear six audio extracts (such as team briefings, handovers, or conversations between medical professionals and patients) and respond to one multiple-choice question for each extract. | Your ability to follow a recorded presentation or interview on a variety of approachable healthcare issues is evaluated in Part C. You will hear two distinct extracts, and for each extract, you will respond to six multiple-choice questions. |
(2) Reading
Part A – expeditious reading task (15minutes) | Part B – careful reading tasks (45minutes) | Part C – careful reading tasks (45minutes) |
| Evaluates how quickly and effectively you can find specified information in four short pieces. You have 20 minutes to complete the 20 questions about the four brief readings, all of which are about a single aspect of healthcare. Matching, sentence completion, and short answer questions make up the 20 questions. | Evaluates your capacity to recognise the specific information, the substance, or the main idea of six brief texts derived from the healthcare workplace (100-150 words each). The materials may include excerpts from manuals, hospital policies, manuals, or internal correspondence like emails or memos. There is one three-option multiple-choice question for each text. | Evaluates your capacity to discern the precise meaning and viewpoint in two texts on subjects of relevance to medical professionals (800 words each). You must respond to eight four-option multiple-choice questions for each text. |
(3) Writing
- The profession-specific Writing subtest takes 45 minutes. Based on a normal office environment and the requirements of the profession, one task is established for each one. A nurse completes the task for nursing, a dentist completes the assignment for dentistry, and so on.
- The assignment is to compose a letter—typically a recommendation letter. A letter of transfer or a letter of discharge are two examples of alternate letter kinds. In the fields of pharmacy, veterinary science, speech pathology, and occupational therapy, letters to advise or inform a patient, carer, or group are occasionally utilised. A written response to a complaint is a separate work variation with a different focus (for Radiography).
- You will receive stimulus material (case notes and/or other associated documents), which includes information to use in your response, along with the task instructions.
(4) SPEAKING
- Your name and profession are verified by the interlocutor during each Speaking test, and there is a brief warm-up talk about your professional history. After that, you have three minutes to prepare for each of the role-plays as they are introduced one at a time. Each role-play lasts for roughly five minutes.
- The role-plays are based on real-world scenarios seen in the workplace and depict the demands placed on a health practitioner in specific circumstances. The interlocutor follows a script so that each candidate’s Speaking test has a consistent format. Additionally, the interlocutor has specific data to employ in each role-play. At the same exam administration, several candidates receive distinct role-plays.
